Youth from the Jardim Oliveira Camargo community in Indaiatuba / SP have recently designed a new project that aims to support residents who are suffering from depression and other mental and emotional illnesses. Priscila Santos and her longtime friends, Edson Guedes and Taylane Souza, were practically raised together in Jardim Oliveira Camargo. The residents of Jardim Nova América, in Campinas/SP now have a leisure space for families to enjoy. After months of dedication, during which community leaders from the neighborhood association were committed to carrying out the park revitalization project, the space will be handed over to the community. Global Communities’ Sowing Futures program, funded by the John Deere Foundation (JDF), applies Global Communities’ Participatory Action for Community Enhancement (PACE) methodology for community development, youth engagement and institutional strengthening in southern Brazil. Students Step Up to Make a Difference When Wesley Carneiro da Silva entered the public school of Benedicta de Salles Pimentel Wutke, located in the neighborhood of Jardim Nova América, in Campinas/SP, he never thought he would end up contributing so much to its development. The Sowing Futures program in Brazil is the product of a partnership between the international development organization, Global Communities, and the John Deere Foundation, and was created in order to provide members of John Deere home communities with the tools and connections necessary to improve their own socio-economic conditions. The strand uniting Sowing Futures’ successes is that of providing community members with a sense of pride—including a place to belong, a way to be recognized, and a way to contribute to the well-being of themselves and the people around them. Mobilizing Youth and Volunteers to Transform a Local High School Students and John Deere volunteers work together to improve educational environment at A.J. Renner school
The new covered walkway, made possible by a $10,000 grant from the John Deere Foundation, allows students to access the renovated gymnasium during inclement weather.
