USAID DOBRE, which is implemented by Global Communities, has provided excavators to several CCs in Ukraine as part of its service delivery improvement projects, which proved very useful when a recent hurricane caused major damage in DOBRE partner CCs Biloberizka and Pyadytska including flooding, fallen trees, roads covered with stones and debris, all of which damaged livelihoods. The goal was in part to help establish a strong connection between the two communities, which are a far distance from each other. Today, the USAID DOBRE program in Ukraine announced its extension into three additional oblasts: Chernihiv, Chernivtsi and Zaporizhzhia. This increase brings the number of oblasts DOBRE supports up to 10. Within the oblasts, 25 new consolidated communities (CCs) will be added to the program’s reach, bringing the total number of CC’s up to 100. USAID Acting Ukraine Mission Director, Susan K. Fritz, made the public announcement via video and delivered opening remarks while DOBRE Chief of Party, Barry Reed, and Deputy Minister of the Ministry for Communities and Territorial Development contributed to the discussion. Recycling clothing to benefit the environment and disadvantage Nermeen Al Tamimi, 22, grew up in a family that is passionate about volunteering and public service. When Nermeen was still a student in high school, she volunteered alongside her sister for a charitable initiative they founded where they performed charity works for the elderly and orphans. Later on, Nermeen started making her own way to volunteer work taking on a project after project in the different governorates of Jordan. Nermeen’s love for community work led her to complete her undergraduate studies with an honors degree in Sociology. In Ukraine, the USAID DOBRE Program supported the opening of a Tourism and Business Development Center in Starosaltivska consolidated community. The newly established Center will serve as a space for local governance, private sector entrepreneurs and regular community members (8,805 in total) to improve dialog through joint business meetings and consultations, to enhance participatory cooperation leading to the community prosperous economic and tourism growth. Here is a short answer – the consolidated communities (CCs) underwent a budget transparency evaluation. In November 2019, the Crystal of the Year Award acknowledged the top performing CCs that were evaluated with the joint methodology implemented by USAID DOBRE and U-LEAD with Europe Programs, including the public coalition “For Transparent Local Budgets!” The evaluation was performed in 106 CCs in 18 Oblasts of Ukraine. 47 DOBRE partner CCs were evaluated for the second time in a row, and their index scores prove that the CCs increased the level of budget transparency in just one year. The maximum transparency index grew higher: from 46 to 61 points. Moreover, there were significant system changes revealed: average budget transparency levels increased 17.7% in all 47 CCs. Noeli Jacinta Becker has been a resident of the community of Paraíso neighborhood, in Horizontina / RS, for over 12 years and cannot contain her excitement in recounting the most recent triumph of the community’s residents—the long-awaited legalization of their land with City Hall. “It is the greatest of all our recent achievements,” says the community leader with pride. The Paraíso neighborhood formed under an invasion of lands belonging to the State of Rio Grande do Sul in May 1999. It is located in the rural area of ​​Horizontina, and today has 87 plots of land and an average of 340 residents. Ricardo Donoso is the deputy director of the No. 422 High School in Granadero Baigorria. For more than 10 years, he has been working side-by-side with the school’s principal, Rossana Inveninato, and where, in reality, the school has become a second home through which a large number of kids pass through to receive their training for life. At High School No. 422, about 950 students cycle through the classrooms in different shifts. On November 19, 2019, DOBRE and the European funded U-LEAD programs co-hosted the Crystal of the Year Budget Transparency Award ceremony. The ceremony took place to mark successes of the best Ukrainian amalgamated hromadas evaluated on a common methodology implemented by USAID DOBRE and U-LEAD with Europe programs in 106 hromadas and within 18 oblasts of Ukraine. The ceremony brought together more than 400 participants: hromada representatives, central executive authorities, experts on international technical assistance projects, and heads of diplomatic missions.
